- First department committee
- Organized entrepreneurship competitions, debates, workshops and seminar
- Overwhelming student response
I identified a significant gap in the awareness of biotechnology and the potential it held in my city during my Undergraduate studies. This realization prompted me to initiate BEn during my undergraduate years, a platform designed to unite students within my field. Being the pioneering department committee, my team and I orchestrated a diverse array of events, competitions, and workshops throughout the academic year.
Our committee’s inauguration marked the launch of the very first Bio-entrepreneurship competition, which aimed to nurture innovative ideas and business strategies among young minds. An esteemed panel of experts provided invaluable feedback, spanning topics from bionics to biofuels and genetic engineering. Participants not only conceived groundbreaking products but also formulated comprehensive business strategies to present before the panel. Our competition’s structure was meticulously designed to provide participants with a holistic experience encompassing communication, pitching, and networking. Witnessing enthusiastic students from across the city embrace this opportunity validated the success of our endeavor.
Over the following two years, we continued to curate workshops and seminars that not only enhanced the visibility of our department but also equipped students with pertinent biotech skills. Our subsequent editions of the entrepreneurship competition garnered an overwhelming response, with participants showcasing exceptionally innovative concepts. Additionally, we organized a debate competition that tackled contentious topics such as government access to DNA databases, stem cell research, GMO labeling, fetal genetic screening, and patents for life-saving drugs.
BEn proved to be a pivotal catalyst, motivating students to transcend the confines of the classroom and embrace their roles as true innovators. This transformative impact was evident in our juniors, who continued to drive this initiative forward even after our graduation.
